The Puppy You've
Been Waiting For.
If you’ve been scrolling through social media lately, you’ve probably noticed that Doodles are everywhere. Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Bernedoodles—you name it. But there’s one lesser-known Doodle that’s been quietly gaining traction: the Retrodoodle. Never heard of it? You’re not alone. Let’s break it down in a way that’s easy to understand—and fun.

A Retrodoodle is essentially a F1B Goldendoodle, meaning it’s 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever. The goal? To create a Doodle with a more consistent, hypoallergenic coat while still keeping that classic friendly, goofy Golden Retriever personality.
The term “Retro” comes from breeders aiming to refine the Doodle mix even further, keeping the charm of a Goldendoodle but dialing back some of the unpredictability in coat type and shedding. If you’ve ever loved Goldendoodles but were worried about allergies (or endless vacuuming), a Retrodoodle might just be your dream dog.
Let’s be real: no dog is truly 100% non-shedding. Even Poodles shed a little—just not in the way most dogs do. Retrodoodles, being mostly Poodle, tend to have that curly, hypoallergenic coat that traps loose hair instead of dropping it all over your couch.
But here’s the catch: coat type can vary. Some Retrodoodles will have tighter curls (think: classic Poodle), while others might have a looser wave (more like a shaggy Goldendoodle). If you’re after the lowest shedding possible, you’ll want a Retrodoodle with a tighter curl.
Grooming is another big factor. If you keep your Retrodoodle in a long, fluffy cut, you’ll need regular brushing to prevent matting (and hidden loose fur). But if you keep them trimmed short, maintenance is much easier.
Short answer? Yes—maybe even more so! Since they still carry Golden Retriever genes, Retrodoodles tend to be affectionate, people-oriented, and eager to please. But with that extra dose of Poodle intelligence, they’re often highly trainable and a little more “tuned in” to their humans.
I had a friend who adopted a Retrodoodle named Benny. This dog was a social butterfly. He would literally lean against strangers, waiting for belly rubs. At the same time, Benny was incredibly smart—he picked up commands faster than any dog I’d ever met. His owners barely had to train him; he just got it. If you want a dog that’s both cuddly and quick-witted, a Retrodoodle might be the perfect mix.
Honestly? That depends on what you’re looking for. Let’s compare:
If you love low-shedding, friendly, and smart dogs, Retrodoodles are pretty fantastic. But if you want a dog with a more laid-back Retriever personality, a first-gen Goldendoodle might be better.
In 2025, it seems like people want more predictability in their Doodle mixes. With the rise of allergy-friendly breeds and more knowledge about coat genetics, breeders are fine-tuning their lines to get the best of both worlds. Retrodoodles are benefiting from that trend.
Social media has also helped. TikTok and Instagram are full of viral videos featuring fluffy, well-trained Retrodoodles showing off their obedience skills and goofball antics. And let’s be honest—who doesn’t love a dog with a little extra charm and intelligence?
If you’re looking for a dog that’s affectionate, smart, and lower shedding, Retrodoodles are an excellent choice. Just keep in mind that their coat still requires regular maintenance, and they’ll need both mental and physical stimulation (because a bored Retrodoodle can get creative in all the wrong ways!).
