The Puppy You've
Been Waiting For.
Life Stages of the Cavapoo. Have you ever looked at your Cavapoo curled up beside you and thought, How did you get so grown up? One minute they’re tumbling over their own paws, and the next they’re reading your mind better than your therapist. As someone who’s spent years in social work and just as many raising dogs, I can tell you—watching a Cavapoo grow up is one of life’s sweet little joys. It’s like raising a toddler, but with more fur and fewer tantrums over the wrong color cup.
So let’s sit down with our coffee (or maybe a lukewarm mug that’s been reheated twice—parent life, right?) and chat about the life stages of the Cavapoo, that delightful blend of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel sweetness and Poodle smarts.
This is the part of their life that most families never get to witness, but it’s where everything begins. This is the first of the life stages of the Cavapoo. Cavapoo pups are born blind, deaf, and utterly dependent on their mom. Picture a warm, fuzzy potato that squeaks if you pick it up. They can’t regulate their own body temperature, can’t potty on their own, and basically rely on mom and the breeder for everything—warmth, nourishment, and cleanliness.
At Storytail Dogs, this is the time when we quietly observe. We monitor their weight daily, make sure they’re nursing well, and that mom is relaxed and healthy. It’s a round-the-clock job, but one of the most rewarding. There’s something awe-inspiring about seeing life in its most fragile, pure form. Their tiny bodies twitch in sleep, their noses sniff the air for the first time, and already, their personalities begin to flicker.
These sleepy days are deceptively peaceful. Growth is happening at lightning speed, even if it looks like they’re just napping in a puppy pile.
Suddenly, the potatoes have legs—and they’re learning how to use them. During the second of the life stages of the cavapoo, they start to wake up to the world around them.
Around two weeks of age, their eyes start to open like slow-blooming flowers. Then come the ears. They begin to toddle around like little drunks, bumping into their littermates, toppling over their own paws, and trying to bark (usually a squeaky hiccup at first).
This stage is so short but so crucial. It’s when the world first starts to exist for them. They begin reacting to sights, sounds, smells, and touch. At Storytail Dogs, we gently expose them to soft toys, textured surfaces (think fleece, crinkle paper, turf), and mild background sounds. We introduce light grooming touches—think toothbrushes to simulate brushing, soft clippers nearby, gentle nail handling—all to say: “You’re safe, even when new things happen.”
It’s like toddlerhood in fast-forward. They’re brave, clumsy, and endearing. And every single experience helps shape how they’ll handle newness for the rest of their lives.
Welcome to the golden window. This is the third of the life stages of the cavapoo and is the critical socialization phase when puppies are most open to learning about the world in a positive way. What happens in these few weeks lays the groundwork for who they’ll be as adult dogs.
At Storytail Dogs, we pull out all the stops. Our puppies are introduced to:
They’re learning emotional regulation, not just obedience. We watch for which puppies run toward new things, which ones hang back, who needs more encouragement, and who needs help slowing down.
We’re also doing temperament testing during this time—little games that help us understand their problem-solving skills, confidence levels, people-focus, and more. All of this helps us place each puppy in a home that fits their story.
Honestly? It’s exhausting. But it’s also like watching magic unfold in slow motion. The first time a puppy climbs a stair or meets a toddler? You’ll swear you saw a spark of pride in their eyes.
Congratulations—you brought your puppy home! And suddenly your peaceful home is full of zoomies, chewed slippers, and tiny piranha teeth.
This is the Cavapoo’s toddler stage, and it’s no joke. They’re curious, excitable, and testing their limits. Think of it as the preschooler who just learned the word “no” and is dying to use it. Your job is to gently shape their world through structure, love, and clear boundaries.
Some days they’ll sit beautifully for a treat. Other days? They’re biting your pant leg like it owes them money. Totally normal. This stage is about building habits—crate training, potty training, leash walking, and bite inhibition.
At Storytail Dogs, our Puppy Kindergarten program extends through this phase. Puppies who stay with us past 8 weeks benefit from:
By the time they go home, they’re on a rhythm. And let’s be real—those early rhythms are everything when you’re adjusting to life with a new pup.
Here’s where things get…interesting.
Your once well-behaved puppy suddenly acts like they’ve forgotten every command they ever knew. They pull on the leash, ignore recall, and get mouthy again. Welcome to adolescence.
Physically, they’re growing into their adult body. Mentally, their brain is rewiring. Emotionally, they’re caught between wanting to please you and testing every boundary. Sound familiar?
Hormonal changes kick in too, especially if you haven’t spayed or neutered yet. You may see increased marking, barking, or sudden fear periods. These are windows where they become more sensitive to stimuli—and might need reassurance around things they were fine with before.
Don’t panic. Just go back to basics. Training, praise, patience. Keep things short and sweet. Don’t expect perfection—just progress. And don’t forget to feed their brain! Enrichment toys, nose work games, short training sessions—it all helps focus that big adolescent energy in a positive direction.
This is the phase every Cavapoo owner dreams about. Your pup is now emotionally stable, mentally sharp, and deeply bonded to you. They read your mood better than your coworkers. They greet you with wiggles, follow you from room to room, and seem to know when you need a little extra love.
They’ve become your therapy dog, whether officially or not.
This is the time to lean into the joy. Explore together. Try a dog-friendly hiking trail. Sign up for a trick training class. Let them be part of your routines—school pickups, coffee runs, Sunday naps.
At this stage, Cavapoos truly shine in emotional support roles. Their intuitive nature, gentle temperament, and manageable size make them ideal companions for people navigating anxiety, depression, or chronic health conditions.
Families who adopted from us often send updates like:
“He just knows when my daughter is having a hard day and goes right to her.”
“She’s become my shadow during my chemo treatment. I don’t know how we ever lived without her.”
This is the reward of all the effort you put in early on. You get a loyal, loving sidekick who’s as much a part of your family as anyone else.
One day, you’ll realize your Cavapoo is getting up a little slower. They nap more. They stay close, not because they’re clingy, but because they’ve settled into being your steady, quiet companion.
Welcome to the golden years.
Senior Cavapoos still have so much love to give, but they need a little extra care. Joint supplements. Softer beds. Slower walks. More frequent vet checkups. Sometimes they need a hand getting up on the couch, or a break from the noise when grandkids visit.
But in return? They give you wisdom. Stillness. Soulful eyes that say, “I’ve walked every chapter of your story with you.”
And if you’ve done it right—if you raised them with intention, gave them a life of safety, joy, and love—then this stage is gentle. Bittersweet, yes. But full of gratitude.
