The Puppy You've
Been Waiting For.
Black and tan Cavapoo have a look more often seen in breeds like Dobermans or Rottweilers, but on this smaller, fluffier frame, it’s downright adorable. Think tough guy at the dog park… who then rolls over for belly rubs from toddlers. It’s the best of both worlds, if you ask me.
Okay, so you know the basics: a Cavapoo is a mix between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. But the black and tan Cavapoo or the Phantom Cavapoo brings in color genetics that give them that dramatic contrast—usually a rich black along the back, ears, and tail, with tan points around the eyes (like perfect little eyebrows), inside the ears, on the chest, and along the legs. Some even have a little “mask” or spots that make them look ready for a masquerade ball.
Unlike solid colors, black and tan Cavapoos keep those distinct points as they grow, though the exact shades can soften with age. It’s like owning a teddy bear that comes with built-in eyeliner and socks. Not bad, right?
So, what’s it really like living with one of these cuties? For starters, they have the same friendly, people-loving personality Cavapoos are famous for. Expect snuggles, tail wags, and that uncanny ability to sense when you’ve had a rough day.
Don’t be fooled by the dramatic coloring—they’re not fierce guard dogs. More like unofficial therapy dogs who happen to look like tiny tough guys. If you’re working from home, prepare for one to nap under your desk while you pretend to be productive.
As of 2025, more families than ever are looking for companion dogs that can double as emotional support animals. The black and tan Cavapoo is high on that list—easy to train, gentle with kids, and confident enough to handle outings to the café patio or your neighbor’s noisy BBQ.
Let’s talk about that gorgeous coat for a sec. Like all Cavapoos, the black and tan variety usually sports a wavy or loose curl coat that’s low shedding but does require brushing. Plan on a good comb-through a few times a week to keep tangles at bay. A pro groom every 6 to 8 weeks will help keep that color bright and the fur soft enough to bury your face in.
Bonus tip: darker coats can sometimes hide dirt a little better than lighter ones (hello, muddy paws), but they still appreciate a gentle bath when playtime gets wild.
They can be a bit rarer than solid or red Cavapoos, simply because the coloring comes from specific genetics that not every pairing produces. That’s why it’s important to work with a breeder who understands coat genetics and doesn’t breed for color alone but always puts health and temperament first.

Here at Storytail Dogs, we’re an ethical Cavapoo breeder in Pennsylvania and an ethical Maltipoo breeder in Pennsylvania, too. Our mission is to raise puppies with outstanding temperaments, resilience, and a readiness for therapy or emotional support work. Every puppy lives in our home (never in a kennel environment) and grows up surrounded by everyday life, kids, other pets, household noises, and lots of love.
We use early socialization methods like ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation), gentle grooming exposure, crate practice, and even short car rides to build confidence. This foundation sets them up to thrive once they join your family. If you’re curious about what puppies we currently have, you can see them here.
